Chancay Megaport

The Chancay Megaport is one of the most ambitious infrastructure projects in South America. Its main purpose is to transform maritime trade. It has modern facilities designed to handle large volumes of cargo. It is the first Latin American port designed to facilitate trade with Asia.

Where is this new port located?

The Chancay Megaport is located in the city of Chancay, 80 kilometers north of Lima, Peru.

Advantages and Disadvantages of the Chancay Megaport:

Advantages:

  • It has modern infrastructure that allows it to handle up to 1.5 million 20-foot containers.
  • It will strengthen trade with Asia, creating an attractive connection for importers and exporters.
  • It is expected to generate a high number of jobs.

Disadvantages:

  • There have been concerns about its environmental impact.
  • It could create some commercial disagreements and competitiveness with other countries.

How does it affect negotiations with Chile?

Chile is known for its ports and leadership in exports. The construction of the Chancay Megaport could present certain competitive challenges, as it might capture a larger volume of international trade and could be seen as a more cost-effective alternative. Therefore, Chile must consider these potential effects and expand its logistical strategies and efforts to maintain its position as a leader in foreign trade.

What is Chile doing to counteract this effect?

Chile is already aware of the potential effects and impacts of the Chancay Megaport and has decided to adopt the following strategies:

It has made investments in port infrastructure, such as the expansion plan for the Port of San Antonio, which includes an investment of more than 4 billion dollars. Additionally, 1.5 billion dollars have been allocated for modernizing the facilities in Valparaíso, including the construction of a new dock in both ports.

Moreover, the company Megacentro is investing 30 million dollars in the construction of a new logistics center located near the Megaport to strengthen Chile’s presence.

Emphasis is also placed on the importance of investing in professional training to improve efficiency and competitiveness. Lastly, the possibility of creating a port network to boost trade between both countries is proposed.

Chile Will Begin Exporting Through the Chancay Megaport!

The Chancay Megaport continues to strengthen its position as a key logistics hub in South America. Starting in March, a new service will connect this terminal with ports in central-southern Chile, including San Antonio, the country’s main port.

Shipping company Cosco Shipping Lines announced that, as of March 8, the new ‘Chancay Express’ (CHX) service will begin operations. This route will link the ports of Chancay, Lirquén, San Antonio, and Callao on a two-week itinerary.

Ultimately, the Chancay Megaport not only redefines maritime trade in South America but also marks the beginning of a new era of competitiveness and regional collaboration. While Peru seeks to consolidate itself as a strategic hub for trade with Asia, Chile faces the challenge of adapting and strengthening its competitive advantages to maintain its leadership in the region.
